A 650 g coco peat brick expands to about 10 quarts (0.33 cubic feet). A 500 g coco chips brick makes about 0.25 cubic feet. The 11 lb (5 kg) coco peat block makes about 59 quarts, and the 10 lb (4.5 kg) coco chips block about 50 quarts.
Put it in a bucket or tub and add warm water: 1.75 to 2.5 liters (about half a gallon) for a brick, or 18 to 20 liters (about 5 gallons) for a block. Wait 30 to 40 minutes, then break it apart by hand. It is ready to use straight away.
Coco peat is fine and soil-like. Use it for seed starting, potting mixes, raised beds and hydroponics. Coco chips are chunky pieces of husk that drain quickly and keep air around the roots. They are popular for orchids, aroids, succulents, mulch and reptile bedding. Plenty of growers mix the two.
Coir is made from coconut husk, a renewable by-product of the coconut harvest, while peat moss is dug from bogs that take centuries to form. Coir also re-wets easily after it dries out, and its pH is close to neutral.
